Club History and Activities
In addition to conducting our fun, friendly and educational monthly membership meetings, the Waterloo Coin Society (W.C.S.) is quite active in the numismatic community having hosted eight major coin conventions over the past 57 years. Our founding members were also instrumental in the formation (with the assistance of the London Numismatic Society) and successful official launch of the Ontario Numismatic Association at the club's third annual show and banquet held March 24 – 25 1962 at the Walper Hotel in Kitchener. Over 750 collectors from across the Ontario and the United States turned up for the two day gala event with 230 attending the dinner.
Although the glory days of numismatics (1950’s and ‘60’s) are long gone the club continues to hold promotional events at local area shopping malls offering free advice and answering many of the common questions collectors and non-collectors have. We are a passionate and friendly group who really enjoy the rich history behind coinage and banknotes, medals and tokens.
In recent years we have enhanced our meeting experience by embracing technology, conducting two 100 lot auctions annually and expanding our internet presence. Like many clubs that have made it through the first decade of the 21st century, we have updated our Constitution & Bylaws ( CLICK HERE for a copy) and offer our newsletter exclusively in digital format to new members. Our specialty themed meetings such the August Peaches n' Cream Ice Cream social and December Christmas celebration are always well received and attended.
Continuing on the 22 year tradition and legacy of the Cambridge Coin Club, we began hosting the Cambridge Coin Show in 2014. Support of this popular spring event and those mentioned above will help to grow our membership, promote and introduce new collectors to the hobby and serve residents of all ages across Waterloo region.
26th Annual Cambridge Coin Show Saturday March 18, 2017 - 9:00 am to 4:00pm
Our next show at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club is currently in the planning stages, so be sure to mark your calendars. Click here for the 2017 Cambridge Coin Show.
In the meantime, dealers looking to add themselves to the waiting list or inquire about tables are asked to contact Brent Mackie. General inquires may be directed to Ben Dettweiler . We hope to see you all again in 2017!
Ontario Numismatic Association Convention April 21-23, 2017
The popular three day convention will once again be returning the same location as the previous year. Holiday Inn, Kitchener is well equipped to handle the needs of attendees and organizers. On many occasions when no member host club volunteers, the duties fall on the O.N.A. executive and those appointed for various key roles.
We have listed this here primarily due to the location. Although Waterloo Coin Society will not be hosting, some of our members will once again be called upon to share their insight, knowledge and passion to help ensure another success as well as working behind the scenes. Visit the 2017 Convention webpage for more information.
Club Promotional Day at Conestoga Mall in Waterloo on November 20, 2016
We were pleased to secure our usual spot near the Winners entrance and return to this location after a brief absence. Thanks to our volunteer members who helped out, we had a fun time interacting with the public and sharing information on coins, banknotes medals and any number of other related topics. We hoped that we were able to spark some interest from many of those who stopped by to see our displays and look forward to returning again in 2017.
54th Annual Ontario Numismatic Association Convention: April 8-10, 2016
Waterloo Coin Society members and volunteers from the O.N.A. did a fabulous job welcoming the numismatic community for a fun and memorable event. Many of the highlights including award winners, exhibit winners, club meetings and Coin Kids auction were featured in issues of Canadian Coin News and the Ontario Numismatist.
It was indeed a wonderful experience for many local area residents who had never been to a coin show before. Thanks to everyone that supported the event and dealers.
25th Annual Cambridge Coin Show
This free event with 27 dealers in attendance drew a steady crowd of collectors from the moment the doors were opened to shortly before closing time. Cash donations to the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank amounted to over $400 and the support Waterloo Coin Society received through the tremendous success helped to contribute to the growth of the hobby in Waterloo Region. A portion of the proceeds generated from the show in addition to benefiting the CSHFB also help to fund activities in the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association.
Our member volunteers really worked hard to ensure the success and had a great time! We look forward to 2017 and seeing many more new smiling faces. Thank you to all who attended!
