1999 C.N.A Convention
July 22-25th, 1999
Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Kitchener Ontario
The Canadian Numismatic Convention process started in November of 1996 with the following story in the December 1996 WCS Newsletter.
"A possibility that arose at our last meeting was contacting the CNA with a proposal that the 1999 convention be held in Waterloo. Apparently , plans for the convention have fallen through and since 1999 is our 40th Anniversary year, a number of members felt it would be appropriate to host the meeting then."
One of President Chris Boyer's goals as incoming WCS President, was to celebrate the WCS 40th Anniversary by hosting the CNA and issuing medals with it.
An official announcement was made in May 1997 that the Waterloo Coin Society had won the right to host the 1999 CNA Convention over rival North York Coin Club.
Design submissions were then called for in June 1998 from all club members. At October 13, 1998 WCS meeting, 5 preliminary designs for convention medal were on display. The designs were based on the rich heritage of Mennonites and early pioneers who came to Canada by Conestoga Wagon. Four of the five designs submitted reflected this theme and the fifth design was based on a WCS commemorative logo. In February 1999 the proposed convention medal design was revealed. It was based on a photograph by David L Honsberger called Sunday Morning. This design was then submitted to the mint.
Early in 1998, Mike Hollingshead decided to issue a number of overprinted CTC coupons to promote the CNA convention. There were some special limited editions printed but they were all destroyed by fire at the Sept.8/1998 WCS monthly meeting in accordance with the unanimous decision made the CTCCC. The plates used to produce the issue were also destroyed after coupon printing was completed. Overprints were created on the 75th Anniversary CTC Coupons. On the face side the print advises the bearer to "See Reverse" and the denomination counters were "X" out. On the reverse side or back of the coupon, it is overprinted with the following statement, "Redeemable for 10 cents only on the bourse floor of the Canadian Numismatic Association Annual Convention at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, Kitchener Ontario, held July 22-25, 1999. Sponsored by the Waterloo Coin Society" The face sides were all overprinted in black ink. The reverse sides had 199 printed in Red ink and 299 in Black ink. The preregistrants at the 1998 CNA convention in Edmonton had the "black ink" reverse coupons in their kits. The dealer registrants had the "red ink" reverses in their kits.
